This course is for beginners with little or no experience in jewellery making. Experienced teacher and practicing designer/maker Matt Dwyer of FIO: contemporary jewellery and design provides a solid grounding in essential silversmithing skills and jewellery design. Students get hands-on each week learning: soldering, saw-piercing, filing, sanding, polishing, making shapes, forms, working with different materials, applying textures, using tools and equipment, designing, solving problems, setting stones, riveting, working safely, setting up at home. You will be able to pick out some pieces of rough opal and will try your hand at cutting them so that the colour shows to its best advantage. The first four weeks are devoted to earning these three essential techniques and projects are designed and made. Then the student is free to design their own silver jewellery ideas and make them.

Design and make your own silver jewellery by creating a wax model that will be sent to a commercial caster to be reproduced in sterling silver. A mould will be created for each piece allowing you to recreate your original designs multiple times, whenever you desire.
