Chip Carving: An Introduction Macarthur Community College

Carving beautiful designs in wood is easier than you think - chip carving is a simple method of woodcarving in which knives are used to remove selected "chips" of wood in a simple pattern. This is a timeless craft that is easy to learn and produces beautiful ornate results. I will outline the basics of wood selection tools and sharpening layout lettering and finishing while instructing you on the techniques that will have you decorating household items and creating artistic pieces in variety of designs. Learn basic woodwork skills. Construct small projects such as a coffee table toys jewellery boxes etc. Bring idea of project pen and paper first session. Course fee includes nominal cost of nails glue and use of school facilities. NB: Safety goggles and safety instruction sheets are provided and must be worn when using woodworking machinery. Bring idea of project pen and paper first session - please note that woodturning is not available in this course. Enclosed shoes must be worn for this course.

Learn the techniques of woodworking using power tools such as the band saw table saw bench wood turning lathe portable power saw router and hand tools also timber finishes to make small projects with timber supplied. The experienced student may prefer to use the equipment facilities to make a project of their own choice. Timber will be supplied for initial instruction lesson although materials will need to be purchased for major projects.
