Working in the allied health industry means you’ll be part of a team focused on holistic care. This qualification will provide you with the skills to support allied health professionals, (e.g. physiotherapists, podiatrists, occupational therapists) in their private practices or healthcare facilities. You’ll be involved in not just the medical aspects of health, but how people function and how you can help them maintain independence. As a member of an allied health team, you can make a real difference to people’s lives.

Allied Health professionals represent approximately 25% of the Australian health workforce. Over 154,000 Allied Health professionals registered with APHRA in 2013, an 18% increase from 2012, and the industry is continuing to experience significant growth.

There is a growing demand on the Australian Healthcare system. As a percentage of GDP, where health expenditure accounted for around 6.5% in the late 80s, it now accounts for almost 10%. Much of this can be blamed on Australia’s ageing population, as chronic illnesses and complex diseases become more common as our elderly population gets larger.

This is no momentary trend, either; as a country we’re expected to feel the effects of our huge baby boomer population growing older for decades to come. The subsequent demand on our healthcare system will be great, and allied healthcare as a whole needs to be prepared for the challenges that this upward curve will bring.
