About Institute for Aboriginal Development

Institute for Aboriginal Development (IAD) was founded in 1969 by the late Reverend Jim Downing and the late Yami Lester OAM, with support from the Uniting Church. From the very beginning, IAD’s mission has been to empower Aboriginal communities and build meaningful connections between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people through education and cultural exchange.

IAD is committed to a ‘walking in two worlds’ approach to improve livelihoods for Aboriginal people.

Our mission is to embed Aboriginal languages and cultures in the life of Central Australia through educational programs and publications.

Members and staff are fully accountable for their actions and uphold good corporate governance practices with honesty and integrity.
